Takeaways by town: every English and Welsh town ranked

By James Burfield, SEO consultant, Bath · Page updated · FSA register

Skegness has 59 registered takeaways for 20,700 residents — 28.5 per 10,000, the highest density of any town over 20,000 people. The top of this table is a tour of the English seaside.

These counts use the town's built-up area, the boundary drawn from where the buildings actually are. That matters: the council-district version of this analysis mixes each town with its rural surroundings, which dilutes exactly the towns this table puts on top. Counts and populations here describe the same piece of ground.

Source: the FSA food hygiene register (premises classed Takeaway/sandwich shop and Pub/bar/nightclub), extracted 17 August 2026, joined to ONS built-up areas by postcode. England and Wales; towns of 20,000+ residents (census 2021). London's built-up areas carry no separate census populations, so London towns are absent from the per-10,000 columns rather than wrongly included. Scotland and Northern Ireland run separate registers and geographies.

Common questions

Which town in England has the most takeaways?
Skegness, with 59 registered takeaways for 20,700 residents: 28.5 per 10,000, the highest rate of any English or Welsh town over 20,000 people on the FSA register.
Which town has the most pubs per person?
Skegness, at 20.3 pubs and bars per 10,000 residents. Rural market towns dominate the pub table for a structural reason: villages need their own pub each, while dense urban boroughs share fewer, larger venues.
Where do these takeaway figures come from?
The Food Standards Agency's statutory register, which every food business must join by law, joined to ONS built-up areas by postcode. Counts and populations describe the same town boundary, which is what the council-district version of this analysis cannot do.
